How To Make Caramel Apple Slices

Step 1: Cut the apples

Wash and dry apples with hot water. Then, cut them into wedges or flat discs. If you’d like to add a stick, go ahead and add the stick to each apple slice or wedge.

Step 2: Melt

Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave for 30-second intervals and stir. When they are about 80 % melted, stir the rest of the way until smooth and creamy.

Then melt the caramels with heavy cream. Microwave for 15-second intervals and stir well. It melts fast, so keep that in mind.

Step 3: Drizzle or dip

We prefer to lay all the apple wedges out and drizzle the chocolate and caramel on top, but you can also dip it into the chocolate and caramel.

Step 4: Sprinkle

Add the toppings and let rest for 30 in the fridge. Serve right away and enjoy!

Methods For Prevent Apples From Browning

Apples brown quickly once they are sliced, and here is a magic trick to prevent those slices from browning so fast.

Lemon Juice

You can toss your sliced apples with some fresh or bottled lemon juice. Take one cup of water, add one tablespoon of lemon juice, toss with apples, and soak for 10 minutes. We have heard orange juice also works from the acid, but we have not tried that yet.

Salt Water

Add 1 cup of cold water, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and apples, and soak for 5 minutes. Rinse lightly and pat dry.

Lemon Lime Soda

Slice your apples and place them in a bowl with your lemon-lime soda. Let them soak for 5-10 minutes. Then, could you remove them and pat them dry.

Caramel Apple Slices Tips

  • Please don’t cut the apples too far in advance, or they will turn brown. Use one of the methods above to prevent the exposed apple from browning as quickly as possible. This is a great way to ensure serving these candy apples to a crowd won’t leave you with brown apples.
  • Watch the caramel when heating it because it can burn quickly. Use a safe bowl to heat in the microwave or stovetop, stirring often.
  • Add any toppings you like! After you place the apple on the parchment paper, decorate it with the toppings you want. You can also let it cool and then add a chocolate drizzle once the caramel sets a bit.
  • For best results, use fresh caramel that is not too chewy or stiff when melted. If you prefer, opt for a homemade caramel sauc e for dipping. Just ensure it is thick enough to stick.

Practical notes

How do we keep the caramel from sliding off the apple slices?

Pat dry the apples before you dip them in the caramel. We recommend using a lint-free paper towel for this. Also, starting with chilled apples helps the caramel set quickly. Or you can do like we did, and lay our apples out and drizzle the caramel on top to make it easier.

What is the best way to serve sliced caramel apples?

You can serve them on a tray for guests to grab and eat. Or, use toothpicks or skewers to place them on one end of the apple slice so guests have something to hold onto other than the apple.

What type of apples work best for caramel slices?

You can use any apple. Granny Smith apples offer a lovely tart that balances out the sweetness. If you want a sweeter apple, go for a Honeycrisp or even a Fuji. Reach for your usual apple variety.
