Now you will place the green M&Ms in a circle around the edge of the sugar cookies. Then leave a small space at the top, to place the Twizzler bow you made.

Once decorated you are able to serve up the cookies or store them till you are ready.

Expert Tip: Make sure to place the back side of M&M’s on the cookie facing up, that way you don’t see writing on the candy.

Optional Variations to Try

Here are a handful of ways to change up these Christmas wreath cookies to change up the looks and even flavor of the Christmas cookie recipe.

Cookies – You can use chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cookies, red velvet, etc. Feel free to use any flavor of cookie you would like.

Sprinkles – Consider using a few different Christmas sprinkles to add a fun look to your cookies. Find little bows, or fun-shaped sprinkles to use to decorate a wreath on your cookies.

Frosting – Now, we used a classic white icing. But consider changing up the frosting if you want. Add in vanilla extract, and almond extract, add color to the frosting, etc. Feel free to have fun with it. You could also color some of the frosting and pipe on a design instead of candies. Now you can use white royal icing for a hard set-top. Just make sure you decorate the cookies quickly as royal icing sets hard. Have all items ready on your work surface to decorate one cookie at a time.

Colored Candies – Instead of M&M’s you can use Skittles, Sixlets, or other candy-coated sweets. You can also use any color of candies you want. We did green but feel free to try out different colors to alter the look of your cookies! You can even buy holly leaves that are sprinkles or red cinnamon candies to use to decorate the wreath Christmas cookies. Look around at your store to find fun items.

Storing Cookies

You will want to store your cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. Make sure to place wax paper between layers if you plan to stack the cookies in the tray. This is going to prevent messing up the decorations as much and also prevent cookies from sticking together.

You may also freeze any cookies you don’t plan to eat. Just place in a freezer bag or freezer container. Then freeze for 3-4 months. Thaw on the counter when you are ready to eat.

Practical notes

Where to find green M&M’s?

You can buy a bag of regular M&M’s and pick out all the green ones. Or buy holiday M&Ms. The choice is yours on what you choose to do.
