The candid photograph above truly encapsulates the essence of what has been an extraordinary and often unpredictable year. It beautifully represents the myriad of moments, both overt and subtle, that have shaped our lives and brought our priorities into sharp, undeniable focus. This single image, overflowing with raw emotion and genuine connection, serves as a powerful reminder of the incredible journey we’ve navigated together.
Embracing the Beautiful Chaos: Lessons from a Memorable Year
In this one frame, you can see the pure, unadulterated joy that brightens my days, a constant source of light amidst any challenges. It also openly displays the beautiful imperfections that are inherent in family life – the tousled hair, the slightly off-kilter smiles, the very real, sometimes exasperated, groans from my boys as they are coaxed into proximity for a family photo. These are the precious, fleeting moments of silliness and unexpected sweetness that fill our home with laughter and love. Yes, there’s even one little head getting affectionately smooshed by dad’s elbow, a testament to the boisterous, loving chaos that defines us. And those unapologetic, open-mouthed laughs? They are the sound of a family truly living, truly connected, and finding profound happiness in each other’s company. This picture, more than anything, highlights the things that genuinely matter in life and, by contrast, subtly illuminates the things that simply do not hold the same weight.
Over this past year, a series of profound circumstances, some within my control and many beyond it, have unequivocally shifted my perspective. My priorities have snapped into focus with a laser-like precision I haven’t experienced before. Aspects of life that once seemed critically important, demanding significant time and emotional investment, have suddenly receded into the background, revealing what truly deserves our energy and attention. This recalibration hasn’t been a gentle nudge; it’s been a powerful reorientation of my entire compass.
Redefining Success: Why Less Online Presence Meant More Life
This profound shift is precisely why, despite my most ambitious intentions and carefully crafted New Year’s goals, my online presence has been less consistent than planned. You might have noticed a quieter social media feed, or perhaps fewer new posts here on the blog. There’s a folder on my computer brimming with approximately 32 delicious recipes, meticulously tested and photographed, patiently waiting to be shared. The reality is, they won’t see the light of day this year, and perhaps some might never. Similarly, that “super important” email campaign I envisioned for growing this community, or the aspiration to see my following expand exponentially – these pursuits also took a back seat. And here’s a little secret, a confession that might set me apart in the blogging world: I hardly ever track my traffic. Please don’t tell on me! My definition of success this year profoundly changed, moving far beyond metrics and algorithms.
Instead of chasing digital growth, my time and energy were redirected towards pursuits that felt more nourishing, more essential. It meant consciously putting down my phone more often, stepping away from the screen to engage with the real world around me. It meant dedicating more time to prayer, seeking guidance and solace in moments of quiet reflection. It meant trading late nights spent writing blog posts for even later nights engaged in deep, meaningful conversations with my teenagers, navigating their world and strengthening our bond. Above all, it meant making a conscious effort to follow the quiet promptings of my heart, choosing to ignore the pervasive social pressures that often dictate what we “should” be doing. This year became about being present, truly present, in the moments that matter most.
The Imperfect Truth: Navigating Life’s Messiness
I genuinely wish I could stand here and tell you that this newfound focus has transformed me into someone who “has it all together.” I wish I could say I’m perpetually cheerful, my house is impeccably spotless, and my children never squabble. Ha! That would be a delightful fiction. The unfiltered reality is quite different. My vacuum cleaner definitely doesn’t get as much use as it probably should. Exercise has taken a significant hiatus in recent weeks, much to my body’s chagrin. I still find myself burning the candle at both ends, often futilely, as I attempt to conquer an ever-growing personal and blogging to-do list, a struggle that, I confess, often leaves me feeling prickly and ornery. And yes, there are many days when I grapple with the pervasive feeling that I am, in some way, failing.
But amidst this beautiful, often chaotic mess, I find immense solace in one profound truth: I am really, truly making an earnest effort to gain profound value from the lessons life is so patiently trying to impart to me right now. These aren’t always easy lessons, but they are undeniably rich and transformative. It’s a journey of continuous learning, growth, and self-acceptance, embracing the idea that perfection is not the goal, but rather authentic engagement with life as it unfolds.
A Heartfelt Thank You: The Indispensable Role of My Community
I guess what I truly want to convey is this: despite my inherent imperfections as a food blogger, my tendency to sometimes over-talk and my recent quiet spell, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your presence here. Thank you for sticking with me, for being a part of this community.
Thank you specifically to those of you who truly “get me” – who understand the genuine intention behind my words, who resonate with my often-weird sense of humor, and who appreciate the authenticity I strive to bring to this space. Thank you to everyone who enthusiastically tries my recipes, who takes the time to leave thoughtful comments on posts, and yes, even those of you who simply read along silently; your presence is equally valued and deeply appreciated. Your trust in me to consistently deliver the absolute best of the best, to truly dial down and refine content, means more than words can express. You understand that your time is valuable, and you don’t have room for average recipes or mere filler content. Rest assured, neither do I. We are aligned in our pursuit of quality and genuine connection.
Thank you for allowing this space to remain a cherished platform where I love to connect and share, even if its pace and schedule have been slower than initially anticipated or promised. Your understanding and patience have been a true gift.
Truly, you, my incredible readers, have taught me an immeasurable amount this year. Your insightful comments, your heartfelt emails, your personal stories, your shared humor, and your vulnerable experiences have quite literally buoyed me up and carried me through challenging times more than you could ever possibly know. You are the beating heart of this blog. YOU are the unwavering reason I return, energized and inspired, to craft and share a new recipe blog post whenever I find the precious time. I love your guts, your spirit, and your genuine engagement! This platform, this shared space, demands a significant investment of time, meticulous planning, and considerable effort. But every single moment, every ounce of energy, is unequivocally worth it because of you, and the vibrant, supportive community we’ve built together.
The Foundations of Gratitude: Family and Faith
Beyond all else, I am endlessly grateful for that beautiful, boisterous family you see pictured above. They are my constant anchors, my greatest source of joy, and my most profound teachers. For their unwavering patience with me, through all my creative endeavors, my moments of distraction, and my inevitable imperfections, I am eternally indebted. Their love, their understanding, and their constant presence are the true bedrock of my life.
And even more profound than that, I am humbly and eternally grateful for an infinitely loving Savior. It is through His grace and boundless love that every good thing in my life has been made possible. He has not only blessed me with countless joys and opportunities but has also provided an unwavering path to navigate through the terribly tough moments, imbuing them with hope, resilience, and perseverance. Without His guiding light, my life would feel utterly meaningless, lacking true purpose and direction. I am especially grateful for this particular time of year, when the profound joy of His birth and the transformative power of His life illuminate and brighten every single moment, reminding us of the ultimate source of love and light in the world.
Merry, merry Christmas, my dearest friends. May your holidays be filled with profound peace, joyous laughter, and heartwarming connections.
{I will be taking a much-needed few weeks off from both blogging and social media to fully embrace the holiday season with my family and recharge. However, I promise to see you in the New Year, refreshed and ready to share some truly amazing new recipes and exciting content!}
