It’s truly hard to fathom that an entire year has passed since Brian and I embarked on our profoundly life-altering journey to Ghana, Africa. That trip wasn’t just a destination; it was a deeply transformative experience that reshaped our perspectives and touched our souls in ways we could never have anticipated.
The echoes of that journey still resonate with me daily. The faces, the laughter, the resilience, and the inspiring stories of the people we met continue to occupy my thoughts, impacting me just as powerfully over twelve months later as they did the moment we shared them. Their unwavering spirit and determination in the face of adversity left an indelible mark on my heart.
For those who may have missed the initial details of our adventure last year, I encourage you to delve deeper into the origins of our visit. You can read more about why Brian and I journeyed to Ghana and the incredible purpose behind our trip right HERE. It sets the stage for the remarkable developments we are celebrating today.
Last fall, I had the distinct honor and privilege of traveling to Utah, where I was invited to share some of my reflections and experiences from Ghana as the keynote speaker at the annual Mentors International gala. To stand before such an esteemed audience and articulate the raw emotions and profound lessons learned was both an incredibly humbling and intensely nerve-wracking experience – an absolute understatement!
Because that concise speech delivered at the gala encapsulates so much of the tender emotion and provides a compelling synopsis of the entire trip’s essence, I felt it was imperative to share it with all of you here. It beautifully summarizes the heart of our mission and the incredible connections forged during our time in Ghana.
Please, I implore you, try not to focus too intently on my voice during the speech. It decided to stage a dramatic exit just a few days prior to the event, leaving me with a rather croaky delivery. (If you happened to attend my presentation at BYU the previous fall, rest assured, this was a significant improvement from that particular vocal performance – quite a step up, wouldn’t you agree?).

As incredibly impactful and deeply personal as the trip itself was for both Brian and me, it’s what unfolded after our return that has truly humbled us beyond words. The ripple effect, the outpouring of support, and the tangible results that stemmed from our shared experience have been nothing short of miraculous, touching countless lives, including many we initially set out to help, and many more, as you’ll soon discover.
You see, when I first shared the details about Mentors International, the phenomenal non-profit organization that made our entire Ghana experience possible, your response was nothing short of monumental. It was a reaction that demonstrated the immense power of collective compassion and the desire to make a real difference in the world.
A Response of Unprecedented Magnitude!
I distinctly remember the moment I tentatively posed a challenge to our incredible community: could we, together, find a way to contribute $10,000 to Mentors International? The goal was ambitious: to fund 100 new microloans, empowering deserving men and women in Ghana to cultivate their entrepreneurial dreams and lift themselves out of extreme poverty.
I must admit, the suggestion itself filled me with a significant degree of apprehension. What if we couldn’t reach it? I understand, perhaps better than anyone, the myriad financial pressures that barrage us from every conceivable direction. My deepest desire was for no one to feel burdened or pressured into contributing.
Indeed, it was a little terrifying to cast such a formidable financial objective out into the world, unsure of what reception it would receive. The vulnerability of setting such a public goal was palpable.
But then, something extraordinary happened. Not only did you meet that ambitious $10,000 target, but you absolutely shattered it, surpassing our wildest expectations and more than quadrupling that initial figure!
!!!
Through a magnificent combination of direct donations and the phenomenal success of the simple weeknight menus eCookbook, which I launched almost precisely one year ago with a pledge that 100% of its proceeds would benefit Mentors International, you, my loyal, wonderful, incredibly generous, and truly kind-hearted readers, collectively raised an astounding $53,941.70.
An Astounding $53,941.70!
Can you truly believe the magnitude of that achievement? And what’s even more remarkable is that this incredible number continues to steadily climb with every single eCookbook purchase or every heartfelt donation made directly to Mentors International through this dedicated link. Your ongoing support is a testament to your unwavering commitment to making a positive difference in the world.
Today, with a heart overflowing with gratitude, I wanted to dedicate a moment to extend my sincerest and most profound thanks for the incredible, life-changing work you have all done. Your generosity has truly created a cascade of positive change.
I assure you, I am not being facetious, nor am I exaggerating or injecting unnecessary drama when I say that your boundless generosity has brought me to tears on countless occasions over the past year. As I’ve contemplated the immense good you have set into motion, empowering these amazing Ghanaian men and women who are striving so valiantly to extricate themselves and their families from the harsh grip of extreme poverty, the emotional weight of your kindness has been overwhelming.
Thank you, from the deepest corners of my heart.
A Profound and Heartfelt Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.
So, what does that staggering $50K+ figure truly signify for Mentors International and, more importantly, for the communities they serve? Well, allow me to illuminate the tangible, life-altering impact.
Because of your collective compassion and incredible support, Mentors International has been able to provide an astonishing 431 additional microloans. This translates into a profound impact, directly resulting in 2,373 individuals being positively affected – individuals who now have the tools and opportunity to build a better future. Furthermore, this ripple effect has directly led to the creation of over 75 new jobs, as these empowered men and women have successfully launched and expanded their businesses, subsequently hiring friends, family members, and vital members of their communities. This isn’t just about money; it’s about dignity, self-reliance, and sustainable community growth.

This outcome is absolutely remarkable and exceeds every expectation! I genuinely struggle to fathom the exponential, cascading “domino effect” this will set in motion. As these initial dollars are diligently repaid, they are then re-loaned, and re-loaned again, over and over. Each repayment creates a new opportunity, multiplying the initial investment and deepening its reach within the community. This continuous cycle fosters sustainable economic growth and empowers an ever-increasing number of individuals.
We are not merely discussing short-term relief; we are talking about an enduring effect that will impact generations of families. The concept itself is almost too vast to fully comprehend, don’t you think? Thousands upon thousands of lives will be transformed for the better, breaking cycles of poverty and fostering a brighter future, all because of your profound generosity and unwavering support for Mentors International!

This report includes not only the impressive statistics but also heartwarming and truly incredible updates directly from a few of the inspiring clients I personally had the privilege of meeting during my memorable trip to Ghana.
Throughout this past year, I have received dozens of heartfelt emails and communications from the leadership at Mentors International. Each message conveyed their profound gratitude not just to me, but unequivocally to all of you, for this overwhelming and truly transformative display of generosity. Your collective spirit has not gone unnoticed, and it is deeply appreciated by the entire organization.
Mentors International, as a dedicated non-profit organization, has navigated through a period of significant change and transition over the last year. These shifts, while challenging, have also paved the way for new leadership and renewed vision, ensuring the organization remains robust and effective in its mission.
It is with a heavy heart that I must mention the passing of Mark Peterson, the beloved CEO, who left us a few months ago after a valiant and hard-fought battle with melanoma. Mark was an extraordinary man, a visionary leader who was instrumental in orchestrating my initial trip to Ghana, allowing Brian and me to accompany DoTerra’s executives. He dedicated many years to leading Mentors International, skillfully growing the organization and expanding its reach to numerous developing countries around the globe. His legacy of compassion and empowerment is immense, and he will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him and working alongside him.
In the wake of this profound loss, a new CEO, Ron Dunford, was recently appointed to steer Mentors International into its next chapter. The organization has much to anticipate and look forward to in the coming weeks, months, and years under his guidance. Brian and I actually have the fortunate distinction of knowing Ron personally, beyond our connection through Mentors; given his character, expertise, and passion, we genuinely cannot envision a better individual to honor and continue the incredible legacy that Mark Peterson so carefully put in place.
Above all, I am profoundly grateful – and once again, incredibly humbled – to have been afforded the opportunity to share my personal experience in Ghana with you all last year. It’s been an honor to illustrate not only how the Mentors International microloan program is actively changing lives in Ghana and across the globe, but also how it has irrevocably changed my own life for the better, inspiring a deeper commitment to service and compassion.
A Heartwarming Quick Update on Naomi!
If you recall, I introduced you to an extraordinary woman named Naomi in last year’s blog post. Her story was one of incredible resilience. A courageous, crippled single mother, Naomi faced relentless rejections for financing, enduring immense hardship and a homeless situation. Yet, through the blessings and transformative power of the Mentors International microloan program, she was empowered to start her own business in her tiny village, meticulously building a future to care for her children and rise above her challenging circumstances.
I recently received an update on Naomi’s progress, complete with some recent photographs, and I must confess, tears welled in my eyes as I read every single word. Her journey is a true testament to the human spirit.

Naomi is not just doing well; she is thriving incredibly! Her radiant smile in these new pictures speaks volumes about her renewed hope and prosperity. She is currently diligently working to pay back her fourth microloan, having successfully paid back all three previous loans in full – a remarkable accomplishment that showcases her dedication and business acumen.
When I first met Naomi last year, her dream was to open a mobile banking kiosk within her village, a vital service that was much needed but seemed an impossible feat for her at the time.
And guess what? She achieved it! Through sheer determination, strategic planning, and the continued support from Mentors, she was able to establish her mobile banking kiosk. It has since blossomed into one of the most highly profitable and indispensable ventures in her entire area, providing critical financial services to her community.
Naomi’s monthly income, which heartbreakingly used to hover around a mere $17, has skyrocketed to an impressive $100 a month! This dramatic increase represents a profound shift in her family’s financial stability and quality of life.
Beyond her personal success, Naomi is now a job creator, employing her daughter and two other valued individuals from her village. Over the past year, by strategically utilizing her profits and additional microloans from Mentors, she has been able to double the amount of inventory in her village store, a move that has directly led to her overall profits tripling. Her business is a beacon of opportunity and growth for her community.

Naomi recently conveyed a powerful message to her loan officer in response to the question of what she would like those who have so generously donated to Mentors International to know about her journey. Her words are a testament to the profound impact of your kindness: “I was once rejected, but Mentors accepted me. I was once a nobody, but Mentors made me somebody. God richly bless you all!” Her heartfelt gratitude underscores the life-changing power of microfinance and compassionate support.

If you have made it this far through this comprehensive and rather lengthy post – please accept a million virtual cookies as a token of my immense appreciation for your dedication and interest!
Thank you, truly and sincerely, for your unwavering support. There are days, regrettably, when the sheer volume of negativity in the world causes me to question the inherent goodness and humanity within it. Indeed, storms of hatred, violence, and malevolence seem to rage rampant everywhere we look.
And yet, through your extraordinary generosity and tangible actions, you have unequivocally proven to me, time and time again, that there is still an abundance of profound goodness in this world. Your collective efforts serve as a powerful beacon of hope, reminding us all of the immense capacity for kindness and compassion that resides within humanity.
This is the type of goodness that, right now, is actively helping hundreds of individuals rise above their dire, poverty-stricken circumstances. It is the type of goodness that wasn’t obligated to be shared – but it was. And it was given not just freely, but in an overflowing abundance that continues to inspire and uplift.
This realization humbles me to my very core. Thank you for consistently inspiring me to strive for more – to be more, to give more, to focus less on trivial distractions, and to remember and cherish my blessings each and every day. Your example is a profound motivator.
Thank you.
