A culinary enthusiast in a warm kitchen environment, suggesting a passion for cooking and recipe creation.

Hello, wonderful community! It’s that time again for a candid chat about what’s on my mind, a blend of culinary adventures, parenting insights, and a touch of everyday whimsy. First, I must express my immense gratitude for the overwhelming and insightful feedback on our last Friday Thoughts post. The comment sections truly become a vibrant hub of shared wisdom, offering practical advice and diverse perspectives that enrich us all. I’ve taken so many of your suggestions to heart, particularly regarding piano lessons for my kids, and the positive changes have been remarkable. My children are truly fortunate to have such a supportive virtual village contributing to their growth. And yes, my online jean shopping spree continues unabated – a never-ending quest for the perfect pair! 😊

Today, I’m diving into a couple of key topics that have been occupying my thoughts. While my mind is often a whirlwind of ideas, I promise to share only the highlights, lest I overwhelm you with the sheer volume of my mental downloads. Think of this as a curated glimpse into my brain, delivered in digestible, thought-provoking segments.

The Evolving World of Cookbooks: A Culinary Reflection

Let’s talk cookbooks. In this increasingly digital age, where instant access to recipes is just a click away, do physical cookbooks still hold a special place in your kitchen and heart? Are they cherished treasures, practical tools, or perhaps a nostalgic relic from a bygone era of recipe research? I frequently receive questions about whether I plan to “do” a cookbook, and it’s a question that resonates deeply, pulling at both my culinary aspirations and the practical realities of my bustling life.

My heart genuinely leaps at the idea of creating a cookbook—a tangible collection of recipes, beautifully presented, a legacy of flavors. It sounds incredibly fun and fulfilling. However, my head, ever the pragmatist, quickly reminds me of the daily juggle: barely enough time for a shower, kids who might need therapy just for having a food blogger for a mom during their formative years, and the monumental commitment a cookbook project entails. Where would I find the time, the mental space, the unwavering energy for such an undertaking? It’s a genuine internal debate, fueled by the #truth of my current life stage.

After engaging with several publishers over the years, I appreciate the immense effort and dedication required. While the project itself appeals to me, I recognize that this particular phase of life might not be the right fit. The reality is, pursuing a cookbook would inevitably come at a cost to my beloved blog, Mel’s Kitchen Cafe, if I don’t want it to impact my family time—a delicate balance I strive to maintain. I simply cannot keep all the balls in the air, no matter how desperately I try. This blog, this incredible online space, is my primary focus and what I value most. I don’t believe I could sustain consistent recipe posting here and simultaneously develop unique, practical, and truly original recipes for a cookbook that hasn’t already been done a million times over. It’s a pursuit that would only be possible if I felt I had something truly distinctive to offer the vast culinary publishing world.

But then, a comforting thought emerges from this brain dump: perhaps I already have a cookbook. An expansive, ever-growing online treasure trove of my favorite recipes, tips, and culinary stories. It’s called Mel’s Kitchen Cafe Dot Com. Have you heard of it? 😉 All jokes aside, this space is my digital cookbook, constantly updated, readily accessible, and a testament to years of culinary exploration. While you might not have needed or wanted to hear all that introspection, hey, these are my Friday Thoughts – honest and unfiltered.

A child happily preparing homemade donuts from a cookbook, illustrating the joy of hands-on cooking and learning.

Speaking of cookbooks, a heartwarming recent memory involves my 10-year-old, a future donut shop owner in the making, excitedly preparing homemade donuts from a physical cookbook. This particular gem was acquired after a thoughtful MKC reader, Liz, sent us the Kindle version, prompting us to invest in the hardcopy. In this instance, a real, tangible cookbook proved invaluable, and the donuts were, without exaggeration, absolutely AMAZING! It was a beautiful reminder of the joy and shared experience that a physical cookbook can bring to a family kitchen.

Currently, my cooking inspiration primarily comes from the internet, my trusty faithful recipe binders, the quirky food ideas that often strike me in the dead of night, and, of course, my own blog. While I’m not a fervent cookbook collector, I do possess a select few tried-and-true cookbooks that I turn to frequently. They’ve earned their place on my shelf through consistent success and pure deliciousness. I’m happy to share a couple of these cherished favorites, both old and new, which continue to inspire my kitchen adventures. My Go-To Cookbooks: Essential Kitchen Companions

  • The Electric Pressure Cooker Cookbook

For anyone who owns an Instant Pot or electric pressure cooker, this cookbook is an absolute game-changer. It has quickly become an indispensable resource in my kitchen, consistently delivering flavorful and efficient meals. I’ve been incredibly impressed with every recipe I’ve tried. Highlights include the creamy chicken and rice with broccoli, which has become a family staple, savory pork tacos, several delightful pasta dishes perfect for busy weeknights, and the comforting apple cinnamon oats. Each recipe has been super yummy, making meal preparation a breeze and consistently delicious.

  • America’s Test Kitchen Quick Family Cookbook

This volume is a workhorse in my kitchen, a testament to reliable, thoroughly tested recipes. Over the years, I’ve lost count of the dishes I’ve prepared from its pages. It’s a treasure trove of dependable family meals, consistently delivering excellent results. Most recently, the sheet pan chicken cordon bleu (referred to as “Unstuffed Chicken Something-or-other” in the book) completely captivated our taste buds, inspiring me to create my own version, which I shared on the blog. While the dessert section might not be its strongest suit, the quick and easy dinner recipes are truly fabulous and a lifesaver on busy evenings.

  • Foster’s Market Favorites

When the occasion calls for an impressive dish or salad, whether for entertaining guests or simply elevating a family meal, Foster’s Market Favorites is my undisputed go-to cookbook. I often consult it alongside some of the exquisite salad recipes found in Chrissy Teigen’s cookbook for a winning combination. What truly sets Foster’s Market Favorites apart is the apparent meticulous testing behind each recipe, the stunning photography that makes every page a feast for the eyes, and, most importantly, the consistently stellar results of the dishes I’ve prepared. I recently made the spring harvest salad, and it was an unbelievably light, flavorful, and refreshing experience. The tres leches cake recipe is also absolutely fantastic – a true showstopper. This book consistently delivers on its promise of delicious, impressive fare.

Navigating the Digital Landscape: Social Media and Our Children

Shifting gears to a topic that profoundly impacts modern families: social media. Have you been following the fervent discussions and eye-opening insights shared by Collin Kartchner on Instagram? He’s ignited a powerful movement around children’s activities on social media, shedding light on aspects many parents and adults might be unaware of. His passionate call to action, encapsulated in hashtags like #savethechildren and #bringbacktheflipphone, has sparked a firestorm of awareness. For me, it’s been both fascinating and more than a little shocking, providing a crucial eye-opening perspective. If you haven’t yet, I highly recommend checking out his Insta stories, starting with the one titled #savethekids first.

Naturally, I have a lot of strong feelings about this incredibly complex issue – a shocker, I know! But beyond my own thoughts, I am genuinely eager to hear from YOU. How do you manage phone and social media access with your children, across all age groups? I sincerely hope it’s clear that this is a judgment-free zone. Please feel empowered to comment and share your experiences honestly, knowing that this is a safe and supportive space for open dialogue. Your insights are invaluable as we collectively navigate this challenging terrain.

Our Family’s Approach to Phones and Social Media

Here’s how we currently manage technology in our household, with kids ranging from 14 down to 5: none of my children have their own personal smartphones. Instead, they have access to two “kid phones” that replaced our landline years ago. With prior permission, they can take one to school or activities if they need to reach me. Friends can text them on these devices if necessary, but the phone and any texting activities always remain in a public area of our home. These phones are also used for making calls related to church, scouts, or coordinating plans with friends. Importantly, they are “dumb phones”—devoid of internet access, cameras, or apps.

For connecting with friends and family via Marco Polo messages or FaceTime, they use my phone. Occasionally, they’ll ask to use my phone or Brian’s to look up a funny video or show something interesting on Facebook or YouTube. (As a side note, our two middle schoolers also have school-issued laptops for homework and internet research, which provides controlled access to educational online resources.)

I definitely believe my kids fall on the less-exposed end of the phone and social media spectrum, and I’m not entirely convinced that this is always the best approach. There’s a fine line of moderation somewhere, and I suspect it’s highly individualized for each family and child. Our goal isn’t to shelter them completely, but to equip them with the skills to navigate the online world responsibly.

Fostering Digital Literacy and Responsible Use

Brian and I are committed to preparing our children to understand and competently navigate the complexities of the online world. We want them to be digitally literate, not naive, and certainly not tempted to engage in secretive online behaviors. Our approach is to achieve this without granting them full, unfiltered access at a young age, and crucially, without allowing a misguided interpretation of social media to become intertwined with their identity. This means we are constantly discussing strategies—and praying for guidance—on how to gradually introduce growing privileges for texting and phone usage within a carefully defined set of boundaries and guidelines as our teens and tweens mature.

A recent and profound realization I’ve had is that, just like any other behavior, my kids are constantly observing Brian and me. Day in and day out, they subconsciously absorb parameters for responsible phone usage. They note whether there’s a clear purpose behind Mom or Dad picking up their phone—checking an important text message, answering a call, or looking up necessary information—or if we are mindlessly surfing the internet or aimlessly scrolling through social media out of boredom or habit. I have no doubt that they will model similar behaviors, for better or worse, based on what they witness.

This has been a significant wake-up call and a powerful reminder for me to consciously put my phone down more often. Sometimes, that means physically locking it away in a cupboard for the afternoon and evening. My aspiration is for my children to see a mother who is engaged, present, and industrious, rather than one perpetually lost in the endless scroll of Instagram. Our actions as parents speak volumes in this digital age, shaping their understanding of technology’s role in daily life.

I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts and strategies on all of this! Please share your experiences and advice in the comments below. Our collective wisdom is our greatest asset!

A Humorous Detour: The Quest for Perfect Sunglasses

On a lighter note, let’s talk about a recent online shopping mishap! I recently purchased these sunglasses from Amazon {affiliate link} after seeing countless glowing 5-star reviews, absolutely convinced they would look amazing on my face. Hahahahahaha. Oh, the sweet delusion! Cam’s reaction from the backseat perfectly encapsulated both of our feelings – a look that said it all. I quickly learned two things: a) I’m neither young enough, secure enough, nor trendy enough to pull off sunglasses like those, and b) my quest for the perfect pair of sunglasses continues. It seems some things are best tried on in person!
