Embracing Real Life: Candid Reflections on Health, Family, and Everyday Discoveries
Hello, wonderful friends! Today, I’m popping in for another installment of our cherished “Friday Thoughts” series. These posts are truly special to me, not just for the opportunity to share a glimpse into my world, but more so for the incredible community connection they foster. Your comments and insights are always the highlight of my week!
This past month has been a whirlwind, presenting its fair share of behind-the-scenes family chaos that rarely makes its way into our cheerful recipe posts – and trust me, you can thank me for that! My brain feels like an overflowing filing cabinet, constantly juggling countless tasks, worries, and aspirations. All the non-essentials are practically spilling out, desperate to make room for the truly important, often stressful, life circumstances currently unfolding.
It’s in these less food-focused, more real-life posts that I find immense joy in sharing the full spectrum of experiences with you – the good, the bad, the ugly, and the absolutely awesome. So, in keeping with that tradition, I’m diving into this Friday Thoughts post with a quick, quirky, and wonderfully random rundown of what’s been on my mind.
As always, please don’t hesitate to chime in with your thoughts in the comments section below. Reading what YOU have to say is genuinely my favorite part! Plus, I’m genuinely looking for some advice on a few fronts, so please, help a girl out, okay?

The Realities of Adult Surgery Recovery: A Cautionary Tale
Adult Surgery Thought: If you can avoid it, don’t do it. Ever. My husband, Brian, underwent a tonsillectomy combined with deviated septum and fractured nose surgery two weeks ago, and honestly, he still feels like death. The recovery process has been, without exaggeration, the worst of the worst. Even if he fully recovers and miraculously loses his ability to snore (a highly anticipated outcome, to be fair!), I think both he and I will forever question if it was truly worth this arduous journey.
The common misconception that adult tonsillectomies are similar to those performed on children couldn’t be further from the truth. The pain is intense, persistent, and often compounded by other surgical sites. He’s been on a strict diet of jello and pudding for over 13 days, resulting in a significant 17+ pound weight loss – okay, I admit, I’m just a teensy tiny bit jealous about that particular side effect! We’ve playfully started calling him Brian 2.0, hoping this upgraded version comes with a pain-free future and improved breathing. The physical and emotional toll on both the patient and the caregivers during adult surgery recovery is often underestimated, requiring immense patience and resilience.
Planning the Ultimate Family Reunion: Seeking Your Best Ideas!
Family Reunion Thought: Yes, I know it’s currently the holiday season and not exactly prime family reunion time, but my overtaxed brain simply won’t shut off! I’ve become utterly obsessed with planning our family reunion for next summer, a monumental task we’re in charge of organizing. The sheer logistics, from finding a suitable venue to coordinating activities for all ages, can be overwhelming. I’m meticulously crafting spreadsheets and brainstorming ideas, aiming to create an unforgettable experience for everyone.
So, here’s where I desperately need your collective wisdom: What is THE ABSOLUTE BEST thing you’ve ever done, or the most delicious thing you’ve ever eaten, at a family reunion in the last decade? Whether it was a unique group activity, a memorable potluck theme, an incredible catering experience, or a brilliant way to connect distant relatives, I want to hear it all! My planning spreadsheet and my sanity thank you in advance for any brilliant suggestions you can offer. We’re open to everything from games and entertainment to specific meal ideas that truly stood out.

The Humbling Journey of Learning Portuguese as an Adult
Portuguese Thought: A few months ago, I made the ambitious decision to buckle down and learn Portuguese. My husband, Brian, speaks it semi-fluently, and I’ve always dreamed of having a “secret language” we could speak in front of our kids – and, let’s be honest, at the grocery store for a bit of cheeky fun. Armed with a healthy dose of “I’ve got this; how hard can it be?” optimism, I downloaded the Babbel app and began my linguistic adventure.
Long story cut short: I have since been sufficiently humbled. Apparently, my “ye old brain” doesn’t quite work as efficiently as it did when I took Spanish in college (all of which, I’ve sadly forgotten). The initial enthusiasm has been replaced by the stark reality of adult language acquisition – it’s challenging, requires immense dedication, and often feels like an uphill battle against forgotten grammar rules and unfamiliar phonetics. Yet, I refuse to give up easily! I will persevere! Maybe. My brain definitely hurts right now from conjugating verbs and trying to roll my Rs. Learning a new language is a marathon, not a sprint, and I’m slowly realizing the effort required to achieve even conversational fluency.
The Perfect Everyday Companion: Discovering My Go-To Cross Body Bag
Cross Body Bag Thought: I’ve never been much of a “purse person.” My style leans much more towards the casual, practical, and hands-free convenience of a cross body bag. Months ago, I invested in this beautiful leather Sak Iris Crossbody bag {aff. link} in a delightful mint color, and it has since become my daily companion. It perfectly embodies everything I look for in an everyday bag.
I absolutely adore it for several reasons: it’s incredibly cute, boasting a stylish design that complements almost any casual outfit; it’s remarkably durable, standing up to the rigors of daily use without showing significant wear; and perhaps most importantly, it’s super functional. It has just enough compartments to keep my essentials organized without being bulky. What makes this discovery even more exciting is that I originally paid over $60 for it, but I recently spotted it listed on Amazon for a mere $27! Whoa – what an amazing deal for such a high-quality and practical accessory. If you’re in the market for a reliable and chic cross body, I highly recommend checking this one out.
Girl Hair Thought: My life, and more specifically my daughter Cam’s life, was forever changed for the better when I discovered these incredible little hair rubber bands {aff. link}. They are a true game-changer for managing active kids’ hair without causing breakage or discomfort. Beyond the bands, this fantastic dry spray wax {aff. link} has been our secret weapon for taming her still-growing baby flyaways. It works wonders to smooth them down without making her hair greasy or stiff. I even spray a little on my fingers and use it to smooth down my own flyaways, which leads me to a slightly unsettling realization: perhaps the flyaway thing is genetic, and I should probably warn her now that she might not entirely grow out of it!

Connecting in the Digital Age: Your Social Media Habits
Social Media Thoughts: In today’s interconnected world, social media plays a huge role in how we stay in touch. What’s your absolute favorite social media platform for connecting with family and friends? Is it Facebook for its extensive network, Instagram for visual updates, TikTok for short videos, or perhaps something else entirely? I’m genuinely curious about where you find the most value in digital communication. And, for those who aren’t on social media at all, could you elaborate on why you choose to opt out? Your perspectives are invaluable. Por favor and obrigado – wait, maybe I AM almost fluent in Portuguese after all?! (A girl can dream!)
The Surprising Canker Sore Remedy: A Game-Changer in Oral Hygiene
Canker Sore/Toothpaste Thoughts: For as long as I can remember, I used to suffer from chronic canker sores, experiencing them several times a month since childhood. It was a constant source of discomfort and irritation. Additionally, I would frequently break out on my chin and around my mouth, a problem I subtly (or probably not-so-subtly) complained about on Instagram earlier this year. To my surprise and gratitude, several of you mentioned something I had never heard of: using an SLS-free toothpaste.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a common foaming agent found in many toothpastes, and for some individuals, it can be a significant irritant. Intrigued, I decided to give it a try. For the last 8 months or so, I’ve been diligently using this specific SLS-free Verve Toothpaste {aff. link}, and I am not exaggerating when I say the results have been revolutionary. I have experienced zero canker sores and probably only 1-2 minor blemishes in my chin/lips area since making the switch. I am now a complete believer in the power of SLS-free toothpaste for sensitive mouths!
Just a quick heads-up: I did attempt to try the Tom’s brand of SLS-free toothpaste, but I almost vomited – the taste and texture were simply unbearable for me. So, while the concept is fantastic, finding the right brand is key!
Orthodontic Decisions: Invisalign vs. Wire Braces for Teenagers
Teeth Thoughts: Speaking of teeth, I recently had my Invisalign braces removed, and it feels absolutely amazing to finally be free! I only had to wear them for a relatively short nine months, thanks in part to having had traditional braces twice as a teenager and being a notoriously bad retainer wearer in my youth. While I’m still diligently wearing a retainer a lot during the day, the sheer joy of being able to eat freely, especially with the upcoming holiday season, is truly a #priority for me!
Having said that, the orthodontic journey continues for our family. My two oldest kids are heading in for their orthodontist appointments this week, and I’m currently on the fence about whether to have the doctor put them in Invisalign or traditional wire braces. There are so many factors to consider: cost, comfort, effectiveness, and, crucially, compliance for teenagers. I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences on teenagers in wire braces versus Invisalign. Please enlighten me with your insights, pros, and cons – any advice is greatly appreciated as we navigate this important decision for our children’s dental health.

Embracing Audiobooks: A Huge Thank You for the Libby App Recommendation
Libby App Thoughts: A massive and heartfelt thank you to everyone who recommended the incredible Libby library app on my last Friday Thoughts post! This app has truly been a game-changer for me. I just finished listening to the profoundly moving “When Breath Becomes Air” and have enjoyed several other audiobooks over the past few weeks. It’s been an absolute blessing to be able to immerse myself in captivating stories while cleaning the house, driving errands, or waiting in hospitals and doctor’s offices. The ability to access a vast library of audiobooks and e-books directly from my local library, for free, is simply fantastic. If you haven’t tried it yet, I highly encourage you to download Libby and explore its endless possibilities!
Dipping Toes into Fermented Foods: A Journey to Better Gut Health
Fermenting Food Thoughts: This is a longer subject that probably deserves its own dedicated post another time, but I wanted to mention that I’m hesitantly dipping my toes into the fascinating world of culturing vegetables. My goal is to improve overall gut health for myself and my family, complementing the kefir we already drink every single day. I’m not going to lie; I’m a little scared of the process and the potential for a kitchen mishap!
I’ve been scouring this website, among others, and have purchased a couple of how-to books on Amazon to arm myself with knowledge. My hesitation largely stems from a super bad experience I had with kimchi when I was 21 and backpacking in Korea – let’s just say it left a lasting impression! Because of that, I think I’m going to forego cabbage for now and start with something less intimidating, perhaps some simple fermented carrots or beets. Talk to me, seasoned fermenters! Do you have any advice, tips, or experiences to share for a beginner? What are your favorite easy-to-ferment vegetables, and what pitfalls should I avoid? Your guidance would be invaluable!
The Age-Old Dilemma: How Much Is Too Much for Shoes?
Shoe Thoughts: Okay, one last thought for the day, and it’s a classic personal finance conundrum. How much is genuinely too much to spend on a pair of shoes? I’ve been eyeing these beautiful Balielf Spirit Walker shoes, and I absolutely want them. They’re stylish, they look comfortable, and they seem to embody that perfect blend of casual elegance. However, the price tag is giving me pause. Is it an indulgence, a necessary investment, or just another impulse waiting to happen?
I know the value of quality footwear, but there’s a line where desire crosses into financial imprudence. Someone, please, talk me out of them. ASAP. Tell me why I don’t need them, or why there’s a better, more budget-friendly alternative. Help me exercise some financial restraint before my credit card has its own “Friday Thoughts” moment!
{current coping skills, and a visual reminder to pause and reflect}
And that’s all for my total brain spill today! Thanks for letting me empty out some of the thoughts swirling around in my head. The scary part is, this is probably only about 10% of what I’d actually like to talk about, but I know you guys have lives to live and things to do! I’m genuinely grateful for your time and attention.
I absolutely can’t wait to hear what’s on YOUR mind, what advice you have to offer, or what everyday discoveries have made a difference in your life! Drop a comment below and let’s keep the conversation going.
