Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Recipe for Juicy, Golden Results

This simple air fryer chicken recipe uses everyday pantry spices and works with boneless skinless breasts, thighs, or tenders. The result is juicy, well-seasoned chicken that’s fast and reliable.

No brining or long marinating is needed, so you can make this any night with minimal planning and still get excellent flavor and texture.

How to Make Air Fryer Chicken

This recipe delivers juicy, perfectly cooked chicken in under 30 minutes, even when made on short notice.

To make this air fryer chicken:

  1. Combine the olive oil and seasonings in a small bowl.
  2. Rub the mixture evenly over all sides of the chicken.
  3. Preheat your air fryer for five minutes at 380°F (193°C).
  4. Arrange the chicken in a single layer in the air fryer basket; cook in batches if necessary.
  5. Cook until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the chicken reads 165°F (74°C).
  6. Let the chicken rest 4–5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Air frying circulates hot air around the chicken, forming a flavorful crust while keeping the interior moist. The seasoning becomes nicely concentrated for bold flavor without drying the meat.

Ingredient Notes

  • Olive oil: Use extra-virgin olive oil for best flavor.
  • Salt: Coarse kosher salt is recommended. If using table salt, reduce the amount to 3/4–1 teaspoon.
  • Garlic: Use fresh minced garlic or garlic powder. Frozen garlic cubes work well, too.
  • Paprika: Sweet or smoked paprika both work; smoked paprika adds a deeper flavor.
  • Onion powder: Sometimes labeled granulated onion powder.
  • Dried oregano: Turkish or Mexican oregano are fine substitutes.
  • Dried basil: If leaves are large, crumble them lightly first.
  • Black pepper: Coarsely ground is preferred; if using finely ground pepper, use a little less.
  • Chicken: Works with boneless, skinless breasts, thighs, or tenders. See cooking times below for each cut.

How to Serve Air Fryer Chicken

Pair this chicken with a wide variety of sides—roasted or smashed potatoes, rice pilaf, pasta salads, roasted vegetables, or a fresh green salad. It’s versatile and complements many dishes.

Leftovers are excellent added to recipes that call for cooked chicken, such as chicken salads, wraps, nachos, enchiladas, or grain bowls.

  • Crispy enchilada-style wraps or tacos
  • Avocado chicken salad
  • Fajita nachos or loaded nachos
  • Grilled chicken and vegetable orzo or pasta salads
  • Cobb-style salads or chopped chicken salads

I make this chicken often because it’s quick, consistently delicious, and universally liked. It’s a reliable staple that makes keeping an air fryer worthwhile.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 ¼ teaspoons coarse salt (or 3/4 to 1 teaspoon table salt)
  • 2 medium cloves garlic, finely minced or 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon sweet or smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon dried basil
  • ¼ teaspoon coarse black pepper
  • 1 ½ pounds boneless, skinless chicken (breasts, thighs or tenders)

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, salt, garlic, paprika, onion powder, oregano, basil, and black pepper.
  • Rub the mixture over all sides of the chicken. Set aside while preheating the air fryer.
  • Preheat air fryer to 380 degrees F (193°C) for five minutes.
  • Add the chicken in a single layer to the air fryer basket (cook in batches if needed).
  • Cook times: thick chicken breasts 13–15 minutes, thighs 16–17 minutes, tenders or thin-cut chicken 10–12 minutes. The internal temperature should reach 165°F (74°C).
  • Remove and let rest 4–5 minutes before serving to retain juices.

Notes

Cooking Options: If you don’t have an air fryer, bake the seasoned chicken on a greased, foil-lined baking sheet in a 375°F (190°C) oven. Follow the same approximate cooking times and check the internal temperature to avoid overcooking.
