Hello everyone, and a special hello to Mel!
I am a devoted follower of this blog, and I must say, your recipes are consistently fantastic – a real lifesaver for a busy household like mine. As for my own journey, I’m a proud mother of nine, and we’re excitedly awaiting the arrival of our tenth child this summer. Life with a big family is a constant adventure, and my personal story of fitness and self-discovery is perhaps as challenging and rewarding as raising my wonderful children.
It might be hard to believe, but until the summer of 2009, I had never, not once, run a full mile in my entire life. Oh, sure, I have vivid memories of the dreaded mile-test days during elementary and middle school physical education classes. Back then, my strategy was simple, albeit incredibly inefficient: sprint as fast as I could until I was breathless, then walk until I recovered, only to sprint again. I knew absolutely nothing about pacing, endurance, or the sheer joy that consistent movement could bring.
After welcoming seven beautiful children into our family over a span of just nine years, my body had undergone significant changes. I had accumulated a considerable amount of extra weight – weight that seemed stubbornly resistant to every effort I made to shed it. It felt like a persistent challenge, a physical manifestation of the immense demands and beautiful responsibilities of motherhood. However, a quiet determination began to brew within me. In the summer of 2009, I decided it was time for a change. I started running, tentatively at first, taking small, deliberate steps. These early runs were slow, often interspersed with walking, but each stride was a victory. That autumn, buoyed by my newfound commitment, I participated in my very first 5K race – a remarkable achievement, especially considering I was pregnant with my eighth child at the time. It was a moment of profound realization: my body was capable of more than I ever imagined.
The year 2011 proved to be a particularly challenging period in my life. Emotionally and physically, it was tough. I found myself at my heaviest weight, and the cumulative effect of stress and life’s demands had taken their toll. But within that challenging year, a new resolve hardened. I knew it was time for a significant change, a comprehensive approach to reclaim my health and vitality. Despite the inherent fear and daunting nature of the commitment, I took a leap of faith. I signed up for a half marathon – an idea that, honestly, scared me to death. The thought of running such a distance seemed almost absurd given my previous fitness levels. Simultaneously, I enrolled in Weight Watchers, another step that felt intimidating but necessary. These two decisions marked a turning point, a declaration that I was ready to face my fears head-on and truly tackle my weight and fitness goals.
{This photo captures me at my heaviest in 2011, a time that fueled my determination for change.}
The spring of that year became a period of intense focus and exhilarating transformation. Through consistent effort and unwavering dedication, I steadily shed 35 pounds. Each pound lost was not just a number on the scale, but a testament to my growing strength and discipline. The half marathon, which once seemed like an insurmountable obstacle, became a triumphant reality. Crossing that finish line was an emotional experience, a validation of months of hard work and self-belief. But I wasn’t content to stop there. Emboldened by my success, I immediately set my sights on an even grander challenge: training for a full marathon. The intensity of marathon training, with its long runs and demanding schedules, became a new rhythm in my life.
During the rigorous demands of full marathon training, life, as it often does, threw another beautiful curveball our way. I discovered I was pregnant with our ninth child! This unexpected but joyous news meant I had to thoughtfully adjust my training regimen. While the original plan might have required modification, my commitment to finishing the marathon remained steadfast. With careful attention to my body and the advice of healthcare professionals, I managed to complete the Mesa Falls Marathon in August of 2011, proudly running across the finish line when I was 15 weeks pregnant. It was an extraordinary accomplishment that filled me with immense pride. Even though, by technical standards, I was still considered overweight at that point, the feeling of crossing that finish line, of pushing my body to such an extent while nurturing new life, left me feeling incredibly strong, capable, and wonderfully alive. It was a profound experience of embracing my physical power and resilience.

Since that transformative year, my journey of weight loss and running has continued with unwavering momentum. It’s become an integral part of who I am, a consistent thread woven into the fabric of my busy life. I’ve made it a personal tradition and a non-negotiable commitment to run at least one half marathon every single year. Each race serves as a checkpoint, a celebration of my ongoing fitness, and a reminder of how far I’ve come. Through this sustained dedication, I’ve steadily progressed towards my weight goals, getting to within just six pounds of my ideal weight – a significant milestone achieved just before learning about my tenth pregnancy. This consistent effort isn’t just about reaching a number; it’s about maintaining a lifestyle that supports my physical and mental well-being, allowing me to be the best version of myself for my family and for me.
This is merely the condensed version of my personal saga, a snapshot of the profound lessons and incredible triumphs I’ve experienced. My journey has been rich with insights, not just about the mechanics of running or the science of weight loss, but about endurance in life itself. I’ve often reflected on these experiences, translating them into broader life lessons and practical advice for anyone striving for similar goals.
